Hello again

Okay, it's time I started writing again.

For several years I wrote a column for our weekly newspaper. It was well received by our community, and I enjoyed finding a way to gently communicate spiritual truths to a secular audience. Many of those articles found their way into this medium.

When the paper closed a year ago, so did the pressure to write. I've missed it.

I'm not making any resolutions, mind you, but at least, this is a start. "Beginning is half done," they say. We'll see....

I often introduce myself this way: "Hi. I'm Steve, the Preacher at the Buffalo Chip Saloon in Cave Creek." People smile, but it's true. A few years ago, some friends and I decided it was time to have a church that fit right into our western community. So we began to meet at the Buffalo Chip Saloon. We meet outdoors. Some of us dress western-style. A few of us bring dogs. It's as casual and comfortable as sitting on your back porch. We like it that way. Our music is a mix of old and new, often with a bluegrass flavor, always with guitars and harmonica. We pitch it low enough for a guy to sing along without hitching up his pants, and simple enough to join in the first time you visit. We teach from the Bible. We believe that it tells the true story of God's loving rescue plan for the beautiful world he made. (It centers on Jesus, of course.) God's Time is the Best Time (Mark 5:21-43)

Jairus was desperate. His 12 year old daughter was deathly ill. As a synagogue ruler, he’d heard of Jesus, the controversial Rabbi who was said to have healing powers. So putting aside his pride, and whatever doubts he had, he fell at Jesus’ feet and “implored him earnestly, saying, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her….’” Imagine his relief when Jesus agreed to go to his home. He would heal his daughter! A crowd was following them when suddenly Jesus stopped. “Who touched me?” he asked. After some confusion, a woman cautiously crept forward and said, “It was me.” What must Jairus have been thinking at this moment? His daughter is at the point of death, and Jesus stops to talk to a woman with a chronic illness! Can’t it wait? By the time Jesus finished with the woman whom he had healed, bad news came from the ruler’s home. It was too late; his daughter was dead.
